SAVE OUR SWAN

THE WHITE SWAN, HUNMANBY

We would like to extend to you an opportunity to help save the White Swan public house in the heart of our village in a way that will encourage more employment and tourism into the area whilst also benefitting the other existing businesses.

It is ironic that Hunmanby Parish Council has just taken responsibility for a painting of Cross Hill from around 1840 and little has changed. This has occurred at a time when the White Swan finds itself under threat of redevelopment as housing.

There is a lot of history associated with the White Swan and the buildings around it, notably, the motte and bailey Castle, All Saints Church, Denmark House and the Market Cross. In the words of English Heritage, when taken together, these buildings form “a concentrated and rich historic environment, with the White Swan ….... addressing both the market place and the Church”.

Furthermore, with Hunmanby having been recently designated as the ‘Gateway to the Wolds’ and steps being taken towards the creation of a ‘village heritage trail’, the significance of the White Swan to these ventures cannot be overestimated.

Our aim is to see the White Swan kept as a traditional village pub, with en-suite accommodation and a good quality restaurant. The stables and other outbuildings (subject to Planning approval) offer scope for conversion into holiday cottages and/or starter units for small businesses. The former bank/hairdressers shop, with its prominent location on Cross Hill, would be ideal for turning into a heritage/tourist information/craft centre.

The White Swan car park already provides a home for the supermobile library and we would be looking to incorporate public toilet facilities on the site, thereby compensating for the amenities which have been lost to the residents of the village and visitors alike.

Please take time to read our leaflet (pdf file below).

We welcome your comments and hopefully your support.
